Liverpool Women announce Rachael Laws contract news

Liverpool Women goalkeeper Rachael Laws has signed a contract extension with the club.

The Reds announced the news on their official website on Thursday (8 August), with the 33-year-old committing her future to Matt Beard’s side ahead of the 2024/25 Women’s Super League season.

Laws has been a mainstay in the Liverpool goal and helped the side gain WSL promotion, while also winning the FA Women’s Championship in 2022, and is excited to extend her second spell at the Reds.

She said: “I’m buzzing, I’m absolutely buzzing. This club means so much to me and it’s like my second home.

“I’ve been here a long time now to know what the club means to myself, my family and my friends even. They are always asking, so to sign a new deal here means the world to me.”

Rachael Laws extends stay with Liverpool Women

It has been an emotional week for Liverpool fans but the announcement of Laws extending her stay will lift the spirits among the fans.

The Reds lost one of their own last week when Missy Bo Kearns secured a move to Aston Villa. The deal secured a nice £100,000 profit for the club, but Scousers are nothing if not loyal and her departure will sting for some time.

Beard is building on the momentum from last season’s fourth-placed finish in the WSL, and tying down a 2013 WSL title winner with the club in Laws for the upcoming season is a big positive.

Matt Beard has a big season ahead for Liverpool Women

She featured nine times in the title-winning campaign under Beard during a loan spell from Sunderland and her know-how of WSL success will be vital for the squad as they begin the journey to topple Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City’s stronghold at the top of the division.

All the focus this summer has been on the club’s attacking talent. Mia Enderby enjoyed a remarkable tournament at the U19 European Championships with England and the Reds broke their transfer record to sign Olivia Smith from Sporting CP for £210,000.

Liverpool are showing intent to improve their goal-scoring output but defence wins titles. Laws helped keep five clean sheets in 15 WSL appearances last term, only four behind Man City’s Khiara Keating.

All the pieces are falling into place for Beard this summer, and with more eyes expected to be on his side than ever before, it promises to be an exciting 2024/25 campaign for Liverpool.
