Liverpool respond as Southampton table £15m bid for Fabio Carvalho – report

Southampton are considering a second bid for Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho, according to Sky Sports.

Writing on their transfer blog [4 August, 12:03], the outlet reported that Liverpool rejected an initial £15million offer for Carvalho, but the Saints remain interested having previously tried to sign the midfielder in January.

The 21-year-old has been in fine form for Arne Slot and has scored two goals during the Reds’ pre-season tour of the USA.

Carvalho endured mixed fortunes last season, spending the first half of it on loan at RB Leipzig before finding his feet in the Championship with Hull City for the second half of the campaign.

Fabio Carvalho has a big Liverpool future

Liverpool have no intention of sanctioning the departure of Carvalho as they believe he has a bright future ahead of him at Anfield.

After a difficult start to life at the Reds under Jurgen Klopp, the Portuguese forward has a fresh start under Slot but will need assurances on his playing time before deciding on his future.

He revived his season after an underwhelming spell at Leipzig with Hull, as he recorded nine goals and two assists in 20 Championship appearances and established himself as a star player for Liam Rosenior.

Slot has chosen to utilise Carvalho on the left wing in pre-season despite his preference for playing as a number 10, and the competition for a starting spot is fierce with Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota ahead in the pecking order.

The priority for now is to stay and fight for a spot in the side, but Carvalho wants to be a contributor for the Reds this season and not become a bit-part player, which could provide a problem for Liverpool with Southampton willing to give him the playing time he desires (The Athletic, 4 August).

He has scored goals against Premier League opposition this pre-season in Arsenal and Manchester United, and can build on his impressive 2023/24 performances for Slot this term. However, it may well be that his future will depend on his opportunities and the performances of those in front of him.

In other Liverpool news, Curtis Jones has been one of the big winners of Slot’s arrival at Anfield.
