Newcastle United plan Anthony Gordon talks to fend off Liverpool interest – report

Newcastle United plan to open talks with Anthony Gordon to extend his stay at St James’ Park and fend off interest from Liverpool, according to The Athletic.

Writing on their website (2 August), the online publication reported that Newcastle will begin talks with Gordon when he returns from his extended break after Euro 2024 duty with England next week.

The Magpies hope to reach an agreement with their star forward and fend off interest from Liverpool, who have maintained their long-standing interest in the forward since negotiations collapsed on a move to Anfield earlier this summer.

Anthony Gordon contract talks will determine Liverpool future

Anthony Gordon must decide whether his dream Liverpool move (The Telegraph, 1 July) is worth tarnishing his reputation with the Newcastle faithful.

Eddie Howe has no intention of letting the 23-year-old leave the club this summer; therefore the negotiations over a new deal will be detrimental to his future.

A contract rejection could give Liverpool the ammunition they need to revive talks with the North East side, but even with Gordon’s approval, a deal is far from straightforward.

Arne Slot already has Mohammed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz amongst his offensive options at the club, and one would need to leave Anfield to free space for Gordon but also to help finance the move.

Newcastle paid £50m to bring Gordon to the North East and with 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League last season, leading to a call-up to the England squad for Euro 2024, only a formal transfer request would get the ball moving.

Diaz is the most likely candidate to leave the Reds. His father has been vocal about his son’s desire to play in Spain (Metro, 27 March) but interest in the Colombian has cooled off.

Barcelona will soon announce the signing of Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig (Fabrizio Romano, 1 August) and are planning to move for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams next. But the 22-year-old has reportedly rejected a move to the Nou Camp, which could pave the way for Diaz (Yahoo, 28 July).

Newcastle began the saga when they approached Liverpool over a deal with the side in desperate need of funds ahead of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability deadline on 30 June. The sales of Elliott Anderson and Yankuba Minteh eased the financial burden but left Gordon with his head turned.

The contract talks will be detrimental in deciding where Gordon plays his football next season, and Liverpool will be awaiting the outcome and potentially readying their move.
