Joe Gomez could force Liverpool exit after collapsed Newcastle United deal – report

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez could force an exit from Anfield this summer after a move to Newcastle United collapsed during negotiations for Anthony Gordon, according to The Mirror.

Writing on their website (31 July), the outlet stated that Gomez was set to leave the Reds pending a medical in a £45million deal that would have seen Gordon move to Anfield, only for the move to collapse in the final stages.

The 27-year-old was keen to move to St James’ Park with the opportunity to become a regular starter in his preferred centre-back position.

Newcastle opted to keep Gordon and sanctioned the sales of Elliott Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion to ease their financial burden ahead of the Profit and Sustainability rules deadline (30 June).

However, it is claimed that Gomez is “open minded” about quitting Anfield in wake of the development.

Joe Gomez now faces big Liverpool decision

Liverpool turned Gordon’s head (The Telegraph, 1 July) with last month’s negotiations and are now in a similar situation with Gomez considering his Anfield future.

The 27-year-old has struggled for game time and is open to the idea of regular football elsewhere, keeping in mind that Newcastle also enquired about Jarell Quansah, who the Reds were unwilling to negotiate for and consider untouchable.

Gomez has yet to return to his Liverpool duties despite not playing a minute for England at Euro 2024, and that decision is starting to make sense in light of the news.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Andy Robertson, albeit injured, have joined the squad for the pre-season tour of the USA and featured in all group-stage matches at Euro 2024.

England did reach the final but it would have been a smart move for Gomez to cut his holiday short and focus on impressing Arne Slot ahead of the new season.

Newcastle still hold a strong interest in the defender and the move could be revived. He has been attracting significant interest from other sides as word of his availability reaches out.

The news of Gomez’s impending move to the Magpies has only just reached the media weeks after the discussions, suggesting that the Reds are actively pursuing a sale this summer and could use him again in talks to bring Gordon to Anfield.

Liverpool have been the quietest Premier League club in the transfer window as Slot made a point of assessing his side before incomings were considered, but as the rumour mill picks up, all could be about to change under the new era at Anfield.
