Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool really rate Newcastle star Gordon, he’s high on shortlist
Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the future of Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon and a potential move to Liverpool.
Liverpool are the only Premier League side yet to sign a player this summer but the Reds will enter the market once Arne Slot has assessed his inherited squad and could revive a deal for Gordon as per Romano.
The Italian journalist addressed the latest transfer rumours on his YouTube channel (29 July), and offered the latest on the future of Gordon.
He said: “The interest of Liverpool in Anthony Gordon remains a strong interest remains a concrete interest, he is a player they really rate internally – so the name of Anthony Gordon remains high on Liverpool’s list.
“In case they (Liverpool) decide to do something in offensive positions, Anthony Gordon remains a player they really rate and so internally they are discussing about the situation because they keep believing that he could be a fantastic player for the future of Liverpool but again the problem could be in valuation.”
Liverpool could revive their interest in Anthony Gordon
Liverpool and Gordon dominated the headlines last month when Newcastle approached the Reds for a deal, desperate to raise funds before the Profit and Sustainability deadline (30 June).
A deal collapsed when the Magpies wanted to include Jarell Quansah in the agreement (Daily Mail, 29 June), and they went on to sanction the sales of Elliott Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion for a combined £65m.
Newcastle are keen to hold on to Gordon, who scored 11 goals and provided 10 assists in the Premier League last season but their attempts to negotiate with the Reds may have backfired with the player keen on a return to Merseyside (The Telegraph, 1 July).

Liverpool have a long-standing interest in the former Everton winger, but one of the club’s current forwards would need to leave Anfield this summer to make way for Gordon.
Luis Diaz is the most likely to leave, and Barcelona could revive their interest in the Colombian with main target Nico Williams expected to remain at Athletic Bilbao this season (Yahoo Sports, 28 July).
Arne Slot has inherited a squad well-stocked in the attacking positions and the focus this summer will be recruiting a new defensive midfielder and centre-back.
But sporting director Richard Hughes said the club will take an opportunistic approach to the transfer window and, if interest in Diaz heats up and Newcastle are willing to negotiate, there could be a chance Gordon will play his football at Anfield next season.
The transfer of Gordon to Liverpool needs to overcome hurdles before it can become a reality, but this is certainly one to keep an eye on as we approach the final month of the transfer window.
