Liverpool move for Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon has ‘real chance’ – report

Liverpool could move for Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon later in the transfer window, according to Merseyside journalist David Lynch.

Gordon, 23, joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 and had a great season at St James’ Park last term and went on to win a spot in the England squad for Euro 2024.

In an interview with the Anfield Agenda (25 July), Lynch said he believes the Reds will return for a move for Gordon, should Luis Diaz leave Anfield this summer.

He said: “I think that’s one that has a real chance of being revived maybe later in the window because that contract situation is there, that leaves Newcastle in a weak position in terms of negotiating.

“Even though they got past all the PSR trouble that they’ve got, the player absolutely would desperately love to play for Liverpool and there’s all that reported interest in Luis Diaz.

“It has to be a bid come in and it has to be right for Liverpool for sale, they’re not going to just kick him out the door. But if that does come together and those ingredients are there, I think Anthony Gordon is a player that we know they (Liverpool) admire absolutely no doubts about that.”

Liverpool to revive their interest in Anthony Gordon

Newcastle approached Liverpool last month to discuss a deal for Gordon, with the Magpies desperately needing to raise funds to abide by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules – but the negotiations ended after they tried to include defender Jarell Quansah in the deal (Daily Mail, 29 June).

The sales of Elliott Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion eased the financial burden on the club.

Liverpool have a long-standing interest in Gordon and he is highly rated by the club’s scouting and analytical departments, but a move won’t be straightforward.

Arne Slot already has forwards Mohammed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, and Luis Diaz as his options this season.

Luis Diaz Liverpool

There is no doubt that the Liverpool forwards struggled last season, adding a quality option that recorded 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League last term would provide needed pressure on the current options to improve.

Gordon had his head turned by the negotiations last month (The Telegraph, 1 July), and it seems the saga will rumble towards the end of the transfer window.

Interest in Luis Diaz has cooled down throughout the summer with Barcelona, the club most likely to make a move, turning their attention to Nico Williams and Dani Olmo.

It would take a monumental turn of events to see Gordon arrive at Anfield in place of Diaz but crazier things have happened in football, and this deal is not dead in the water yet.
