Liverpool send officials as Charlie Setford transfer wanted from Ajax already

Liverpool have sent scouts to watch Ajax goalkeeper Charlie Setford over the last 12 months, according to Graeme Bailey.

The journalist reported via HITC on 12 July that Manchester City have also scouted the 20-year-old amid recent speculation around the future of Ederson.

The Reds and City aren’t the only Premier League teams vying for his transfer as the newly promoted Southampton have also been rumoured to have interest in the academy talent.

Although the Arne Slot era is well and truly underway at Liverpool, it seems as if the Reds’ interest in the youngster has been long-running.

A move for Setford seemingly didn’t transpire whilst Jurgen Klopp was in charge but that could change now the Netherlands native is in charge.

Alisson is a player who has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League [TEAMtalk, 12 July]. This is an unlikely move to transpire but should it happen, the Reds would need to be prepared.

The departure of Adrian has already left the Anfield club without a third-choice keeper and has resulted in talks of Vitezslav Jaros taking up the role [James Pearce, 13 July].

But, although Setford hasn’t yet made a senior appearance, from the promise he has shown within the Jong Ajax team, he’d undoubtedly be a solid coup for Slot.

He even managed to bag Ajax’s Talent of the Year award in 2022 which, for an academy of their calibre, is a very respectable achievement.
