Liverpool reignite interest in £25m Borussia Dortmund star Karim Adeyemi

Liverpool are set to make a move for Borussia Dortmund winger Karim Adeyemi, according to Sky Sports Germany.

Writing on their website (8 July), it was reported Dortmund are looking for a fee around £25million to recoup the cost they paid RB Salzburg for the forward in 2022.

The Reds will have to fight off the likes of Chelsea, AC Milan and Juventus, who are also in the race for the Germany international.

Liverpool have been long-standing admirers of Adeyemi, with interest dating back as far as 2016.

Liverpool aim to be third time lucky for Karim Adeyemi

Adeyemi first appeared on the Reds’ radar in 2016 when he was plying his trade in the youth setup of German side SpVgg Unterhaching (The Athletic, 30 September 2021).

Only 14 years old, a move never materialised and he made the switch to RB Salzburg two years later for £2.5m.

Prior to his move to Dortmund, Liverpool tried to hijack the transfer but Adeyemi opted to return to his native Germany.

Now the Reds have their chance to sign a player that has been on the club’s watchlist for eight years.

After an impressive debut campaign for Dortmund with nine goals and six assists, a Syndesmosis ligament tear halted his development last season.

He ended his second year at the club with five goals and two assists and his form leaves Dortmund open to offers.

The former Bundesliga Rookie of the Season fits the profile that CEO of football Michael Edwards looks for at Liverpool.

With five years of top-flight experience at RB Salzburg and Dortmund, and still 22-years-old, he is still yet to reach the heights his career promised.

But this move, like the Anthony Gordon move, is another that doesn’t make sense for the club. Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota can all play on the left of the attack at Anfield.

There are more pressing areas of the squad that need addressing in the transfer window whilst Arne Slot assesses the current crop of players.

The Borussia Dortmund forward seems more likely to play his football away from Anfield next season.
