Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group open talks for Bordeaux takeover
Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have opened discussions to take over Bordeaux, according to France Bleu Gironde.
Writing on their website (9 July), the French publication said FSG are serious about purchasing the Ligue 2 side and have sat down with current owner Gérard Lopez and the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion to thrash out a deal.
It added that Lopez would likely retain a majority share in Bordeaux after he has pumped in €60million over three years.
Liverpool to join multi-club model?
Multi-club models have their detractors and are controversial with some, but they certainly are not uncommon now.
Indeed, Manchester City are part of the City Football Group, which has several teams under its umbrella, such as Girona, New York City, and Troyes.
The Reds’ fierce rivals Manchester United have now also dabbled into multi-club ownership, with INEOS – who now own a stake in the Red Devils – also the owners of Nice in France.

The idea behind it is to get the benefit of collaborative knowledge and pool a greater network of scouts to keep an eye on the world’s best talents.
Whether this leads to FSG looking to spread their wings even further remains to be seen, of course, but it certainly is a model that is becoming more widespread in football.
If it helps Liverpool in the long term then supporters might be more open to the idea of a multi-club model.
