Liverpool make new key behind-the-scenes appointment

Liverpool have appointed Phil Holliday to be the club’s new director of first-team operations, according to the Liverpool ECHO.

Writing on their website [4 July], Holliday will replace Ray Haughan who stepped down from the position after 16 years at the club.

Jurgen Klopp arranged for a send off for Haughan at Anfield after the final match of the 2023/24 season against Wolves.

Holliday has worked for the club for nine years and upgrades from his role as vice-president of travel management.

His new official job title is director of first-team operations and travel.

Liverpool continue to make changes behind the scenes

It has been a summer of change for Liverpool as the club look to move on in the post-Jurgen Klopp era.

Fenway Sports Group wasted no time in re-structuring the club’s hierarchy following the German’s announcement to leave Anfield.

Former sporting director Michael Edwards returned as CEO of football operations and immediately appointed Richard Hughes as sporting director.

The two decided on the appointment of Arne Slot to replace Klopp in the Anfield dugout, and the Dutchman brought his own backroom staff with him.

Sipke Hulshoff joined as assistant coach, Ruben Peeters as lead physical performance coach as well as Fabian Otte as head of first-team goalkeeper coach.

Pep Ljinders followed Klopp out of Anfield and is now manager of RB Salzburg.

Goalkeeper coach John Achterberg left the club after 15 years to join Steven Gerrard at Al Ettifaq.

Head of recovery and performance Andreas Schlumberger, goalkeeper coach Jack Robinson and fitness coach Andreas Kornmayer also left the club this summer [Liverpool ECHO, 18 May].

Holliday’s appointment is the latest in a string of backroom staff changes happening at Liverpool.

The summer of change continues at Anfield and there is expected to be more backroom staff changes made in the coming weeks.
