National media laments ‘unsuccessful’ outing from Liverpool ace Diogo Jota

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has been slammed for his Portugal performance against Georgia by Portuguese outlet Jornal de Noticias.

Writing in their newspaper [June 27, Pg6] they awarded Jota a 4/10 match rating for an ‘unsuccessful’ performance.

The report read: “He came on in the 75th minute to replace Pedro Neto and tried to stir the national team’s attack, thanks to quick moves to surprise the opponent. But it turned out to be unsuccessful.”

Jota missed a big chance to pull one back for Portugal, failing to divert goalward a Francisco Conceicao cross.

Harsh rating for Liverpool star Jota

The rating for Jota from Portuguese media is harsh considering the circumstances.

Roberto Martinez named a rotated side for the match in what was a dead rubber for Portugal.

Portugal had already guaranteed qualification to the Euro 2024 knockouts prior to their match with Georgia on Wednesday.

Not many would have predicted a Georgia win that saw them qualify for the knockouts of a major tournament for the first time in their history.

But a four match rating for a 15-minute cameo appearance seems harsh for the Liverpool man.

Sofascore awarded Jota a modest 6.3 rating, more appropriate given the amount of time he was on the pitch.

Despite missing a big chance, he showed that he can be dangerous when he plays.

The Liverpool number 20 has been a bit-part player for Portugal thus far in the tournament.

As Portugal progress they will need a player of Jota’s quality if they stand any chance of winning the competition.

He certainly has the quality to deliver on the international stage if given the appropriate game time.
