Liverpool Women star Fuka Nagano called up to Japan’s 2024 Olympics team
Liverpool Women star Fuka Nagano has been called up to the 2024 Olympic Games by Japan, as confirmed by the Official Women’s Football Account for Japan.
The Japan midfielder has been key to the Liverpool Women’s side this term and her call-up is no doubt deserved.
The Olympic Games are set to commence on the 26 July and finish on 11 August.
How good is Liverpool Women’s star Fuka Nagano?
Although the Reds didn’t have the best of seasons in the Women’s Super League, Nagano always put in a solid shift when called upon.
The Japan international played 21 of the 22 games possible this season but failed to register a goal or assist.
The midfielder is a winner of the U20 World Cup when Japan took the title in 2018.
And, despite only making her senior international debut in 2018, she has since made herself ever-present in the starting line-up.
Her lack of goals may seem like a problem, however, when playing she is often used as the link between the defence and the midfield, opting to undertake an almost deep-lying playmaker role.
Her play both in and out of possession is unraveled and her competence in the defensive-midfield role has been key for Liverpool to allow players to push further forward.
Much like with Liverpool, Nagano plays a similar defensive role and has often been key to the way her country attack.
One of the only negatives in her game is her lack of versatility. This deep-lying role is key to her game and without being deployed there, she can’t used her strongest abilities.
One thing is for sure, at the age of just 25, there is plenty of time for her to develop and become a stronger player for both her country and Liverpool.
These Olympic Games could finally be a chance for her to showcase her skillset on a grand stage once again.
