Al Nassr preparing to drop ‘market bomb’ in transfer for Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

Al Nassr are preparing a transfer that would make Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk the “highest-paid defender” in world football, according to Marca.

The Spanish outlet claims that the Saudi club have even met Van Dijk’s representatives on Tuesday (11 June.)

Van Dijk’s transfer isn’t the only big signing Cristiano Ronaldo’s team are vying for as they are also “in negotiations” with Juventus’ goalkeeper, Wojeiech Szczesny.

Why Liverpool can’t lose Virgil van Dijk this summer

The Dutchman is turning 33 this summer however as shown last season, he is still among the world’s best defenders.

Van Dijk played a total of 48 times for Liverpool over the course of the 2023/24 season and even managed to contribute to six goals.

This not only shows that despite his age he was entrusted by Jurgen Klopp to lead his defensive line but also shows that he can still play consistently at the top level.

As much as the Netherlands international was consistent this season, the same can’t be said about his defensive partner.

Over the course of the season, at least three of the Reds’ players were deployed next to the centre-back with Jarell Quansah surprisingly appearing the most next to him.

Prior to his injury, Joel Matip was the most likely candidate to be paired with the Dutchman however as he was sidelined for the entirety of the term, it wasn’t meant to be.

And, as the former Cameroon international has now departed the club upon the expiry of his contract, the Reds are vying for a new central defender.

But, if Van Dijk were to leave, there would be hardly any consistency in the heart of their defence and Liverpool would be missing their leader.

Hence, why it’s key for Arne Slot to keep the defender at Anfield next season to not only allow a smooth transition but in order to help any new signings.
