Liverpool set to battle Manchester United and Barcelona for Jeremie Frimpong

Liverpool are “interested” in bringing Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong to Anfield this summer, according to SportBild.

The report details that alongside Liverpool, both Barcelona and Manchester United are also interested in acquiring the right-back’s services.

Frimpong has a reported £33.7m release clause included into his contract this summer so a striking a deal would not be beyond the realms of possibility.

Why Jeremie Frimpong would be an ideal addition to the Liverpool squad

Frimpong has been in the form of his career this season. Not only has he managed to win both the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal but he has also been key to Bayer Leverkusen’s success.

The right-back has played a total of 47 times for Xabi Alonso’s side and has surprisingly contributed to 26 goals.

Although he was used predominantly as a right winger, his defensive contributions can’t go unseen.

As per Sofascore, in this season’s Bundesliga, the 23-year-old has recovered an average of three balls per game and has made no errors that have led to goals.

In comparison to Trent Alexander-Arnold, the England international has a higher average of balls recovered (6.3), but, his errors that have led to goals stand at two.

Not only does this showcase his defensive stability compared to the Liverpool man but it also shows how strong his overall game is.

Liverpool Trent Alexander Arnold

If Frimpong were to join Arne Slot at Anfield this summer, it would no doubt be a statement of intent from the Reds.

It would showcase that they mean business and are not taking any prisoners this season. The addition of the former Manchester City man would also allow Alexander-Arnold to move forward and express his creative ability much better.

And, with the England international being able to move forward, it would help the Reds in the midfield department.

Because, alongside one or two centre-backs, a defensive-midfielder will likely be high on Slot’s priority list so that players such as Tyler Morton and Stefan Bajcetic aren’t too relied upon.

This is essential, especially if Liverpool want to compete for the Premier League and Champions League next term.
