Bayern Munich eye Liverpool ace Joe Gomez for summer transfer
Vincent Kompany is eyeing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez for a summer transfer to Bayern Munich, according to the Daily Mirror.
The new Die Roten boss is said to be keen on taking the England defender to the Bundesliga because he is impressed by the 27-year-old’s versatility.
Liverpool would rather not lose Gomez following one of his best seasons in a Liverpool shirt and the Mirror said he is regarded as a “hugely-important” player for the Arne Slot era.
The defender is tied down with the Reds until at least 2027 following his contract extension back in 2022.
Why are Bayern Munich looking at Liverpool ace Joe Gomez?
Bayern, and especially Kompany, like Gomez due to his ability to play across the back four and ability to transition to several positions.
This season the defender has been more of a full-back for the Reds due to the multiple injuries suffered by Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, and Kostas Tsimikas.
However, the former Charlton man has largely been used as a partner to Virgil Van Dijk in centre-back throughout his Anfield career.
Throughout the 2023/24 campaign, Gomez was one of, if not the best, players at Liverpool.
He was one of the Reds’ most consistent players, appearing in a total of 51 games while managing to assist three goals.
Granted, he is yet to score his first professional goal, however, hopefully that will come sooner rather than later.
Gomez’s versatility isn’t the only reason why Kompany is vying for his transfer this summer.
Additionally, on 11 June Florian Plettenberg reported on his X account that the German giants are looking at putting Matthijs de Ligt up for sale.
If the Dutchman’s sale comes to fruition, Bayern would be down another defender and would be left with just three natural centre-backs.
However, with the season Kim Min-jae experienced last season, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the Bavaria outlet are looking at plenty of potential options this summer.
