Liverpool transfer news as Mainz talks begin over Sepp van den Berg exit

Liverpool and Mainz have started negotiations over a permanent move away from Anfield for Sepp van den Berg, according to Florian Plettenberg.

The Sky Germany journalist reported via X on Friday (7 June) that the German club are keen to keep the 22-year-old defender after a successful loan spell while he is also keen to make his stay permanent this summer.

Although nothing has yet been agreed, the Mainz chiefs are optimistic they will reach an agreement with Arne Slot’s side soon so that the deal can be completed.

Writing on X, Plettenberg said: “Negotiations between Liverpool and Mainz about a permanent deal have started! Mainz 05 want to keep the 22 y/o central defender. And van den Berg, eager to stay.

“Mainz bosses, optimistic to find an agreement with Liverpool soon.”

Will Liverpool sell Sepp van den Berg during the summer transfer window at Anfield?

This summer could see a big overhaul at Anfield as Slot looks to put his stamp on the squad and while much bigger names than Van de Berg may depart, this is a good start to the process on Merseyside.

The defender was always highly thought of as he came through the Reds’ youth ranks, but he has never quite managed to make the step up to be a regular in the Premier League despite exiting on a number of loan spells.

His time with Mainz has shown that he is more than capable of playing regularly in the Bundesliga and that will ensure that Liverpool will be able to command a higher fee for his services than they could have 12 months ago.

Hopefully, the two clubs will be able to agree on a price sooner rather than later and then this deal can be completed. Then, the Reds can begin to focus on potential incomings ahead of the start of pre-season.
