Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has revealed his ambition is to be a consistent number one ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

Kelleher, 25, made 26 appearances across all competitions for the Reds in 2023/24, keeping five clean sheets.

And the Irishman now feels he is "ready and capable" of being the main man between the sticks at a club, after deputising for Alisson.

Speaking to the Athletic (29 May), he said: "I’m proud of this season, I’ve really proved myself.

"I love being at Liverpool and hopefully there’s more to come there.

"But I feel like I’ve done my years as a No 2. The ambition now is to be a No 1. I am ready and capable."

Can Caoimhin Kelleher fulfil his ambition at Liverpool?

It seems unlikely that Kelleher will get the chance to become Liverpool's first-choice goalkeeper.

The high number of appearances he made this season - for a second-choice shot-stopper - came as a result of the injury issues suffered by Alisson, who swiftly reclaimed his place upon recovering.

The Brazilian is widely considered one of the best goalkeepers in world football and, at the age of 31, has plenty of years left at the top, given the longevity of shot-stoppers' careers compared to their outfield teammates.

Liverpool will surely not be short of offers for a 25-year-old who has demonstrated his ability to step up capably for such a prestigious figure at Anfield this term - and the likelihood is that Kelleher will move on, leaving the Reds in need of a new back-up to Alisson.

The Irishman's departure will be a blow for Liverpool, who are unlikely to find a goalkeeper of Kelleher's quality willing to play second-fiddle.
