Liverpool set to splash ‘Significant’ eight-figure fee to finalise Arne Slot deal

Liverpool are set to spend £13m on bringing Arne Slot to Anfield as the new manager in a “significant” deal, according to Dan Plumley.

The Dutch manager has been identified as the perfect replacement for outgoing boss Jurgen Klopp this summer, having spent the last three-and-a-half years at Feyenoord.

Fabrizio Romano reports that a deal has been agreed between the two clubs for Slot and his staff to move to Anfield at the end of the season, and when asked if that is a big fee for a manager, football finance expert Plumley revealed why it’s a worthwhile investment for the Reds.

I think it’s in line with the times,” he exclusively told Liverpool News.

“I think you look at that figure and it does seem a significant figure to splash out on a manager, to get that person, but if you look at Liverpool and the expectations they’ve set under Jurgen Klopp, first Premier League title, getting them back to the kind of pinnacle of English football in the last few years, and the expectations that come with that, it is a significant statement from the club.

“If that is the manager that they want then they have to go out and get that manager, and then you have to pay those sorts of fees.

“It is a significant amount of outlay, I guess you’re looking then at the return of investment and working that through continued Champions League participation, winning trophies, winning titles.

All of that outweighs the initial outlay if that’s the manager that you want, so I think it’s just a sign of the times to be honest, despite the significant financial outlay for a manager.”

£13m is peanuts to Liverpool to get the perfect Klopp replacement

£13m is a lot of money when it comes to a manager and his staff, but it is a sign of the times that smaller and less financially capable clubs are demanding these fees to lose their top men.

Transfer fees have become inflated as a result of the same thing in recent years, with Brighton the prime example of how it can become the model for a club, and Feyenoord have been pretty fair with their demands.

It was up to Liverpool to decide whether or not it would be worthwhile paying that amount, and considering the extensive search for Klopp’s replacement it clearly shows they have put thought into it.

Slot was the man they identified as the perfect Klopp replacement, and in the grand scheme of things, £13m is peanuts for Liverpool.

As Plumley says, if they feel that Slot is the man to come in and help them win titles and trophies then it’s worth every penny of the initial outlay so it’s good for the board to get the deal done.
