Adrian shares Liverpool exit desire with new transfer admission at Anfield
Adrian has expressed his desire to leave Liverpool and return to La Liga this summer.
The 37-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is third-choice at Anfield behind Alisson and Caoimhin Kelleher.
The Spaniard could now look to return to his homeland in search of more regular game time than he has been afforded on Merseyside of late.
Speaking to Movistar Plus (13 May), he said: “I would like to return to LaLiga after 11 seasons in the Premier League. It would be the end of a cycle. I’m still ready to compete. I feel very good despite being 37.
“You know that goalkeepers if you take good care of yourself, if you haven’t had any serious injuries lately and you’re fine, the daily training gives you that intensity that makes you compete.
“I think [I] have a long time left and it’s true that I would like to return to the LaLiga. It has to be a nice, interesting project.
“I haven’t sat down with Liverpool yet either. I don’t rule out that we could have a conversation, but it is true that [I] will be looking out of the corner of [my] eye to see what happens in LaLiga.”
Liverpool could be in the market for a new goalkeeper
Adrian’s desire to return to Spain in search of regular football is certainly understandable.
The shot-stopper has made just two appearances in all competitions since the start of the 2021/22 campaign nearly three seasons ago.
One of those came in the League Cup at Preston North End in October 2021, while his most recent outing was in the Community Shield the following year against Manchester City. In 2023/24, he has not made a single appearance and has only been named in the squad 25 times.
However, Adrian’s departure could be compounded by the possible loss of second-choice goalkeeper Kelleher, who has stepped in ably to cover for Alisson when the Brazilian was sidelined through injury.
At the age of 25, the Ireland international is thought to be open to the prospect of becoming a first-choice shot-stopper elsewhere, which would leave Liverpool light in the goalkeeping department.
A new custodian may end up being high on incoming head coach Arne Slot’s priority list this summer.
