Gary Neville embarrasses himself with Liverpool and Manchester United admission

Gary Neville’s previous insistence that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp “would swap his midfield” for Manchester United’s has not aged well.

Liverpool have been contesting the Premier League title with Manchester City and Arsenal this season, as well as winning the Carabao Cup, while United have endured a disappointing campaign and sit eighth after a humbling 4-0 defeat against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on 6 May.

Neville, however, had previously suggested the quality United possessed in the middle of the park was greater than Liverpool’s.

An old clip of Neville was shared by an X user (6 May), in which the former United defender says: “When you look at the actual players, let’s take United as an example – you’ve got [Bruno] Fernandes, [Mason] Mount, Casemiro, [Christian] Eriksen. I think Jurgen Klopp would swap his midfield, now, for United’s.”

Liverpool would laugh at Manchester United transfers

Based on the seasons the two clubs are having, it certainly seems unlikely that Klopp has been casting an envious eye on the stable of midfielders under Erik ten Hag’s command at Old Trafford.

The German head coach oversaw a midfield revamp this summer, adding Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch following the departures of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner.

Mason Mount was reportedly the subject of interest from Liverpool before he made the switch to United – but following an injury-hit season in which the Englishman has played just 753 minutes across all competitions, scoring one goal, it is likely that Klopp and Liverpool will feel they dodged a bullet.

Christian Eriksen certainly does not possess the dynamism necessary to play in a Klopp midfield and the less said about Casemiro’s dramatic decline after his disastrous showing against Palace, the better.

Bruno Fernandes is, of course, an established Premier League star, but the Reds will surely feel they have the better unit on the whole.
