Alan Shearer slams ‘rotten’ Liverpool v West Ham after being ‘battered’ at Everton
Alan Shearer has slammed Liverpool for their “rotten” first-half performance in their 2-2 draw with West Ham United on 27 April.
The 53-year-old was particularly scathing of the Reds for their lack of response after suffering a 2-0 Merseyside derby defeat against Everton at Goodison Park three days earlier.
Shearer revealed his surprise that Liverpool did not muster a more pointed display after getting “battered” and “outfought” by their rivals.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast (29 April), he said: “After what happened at Everton against your biggest rivals – you got battered, you got outfought and all the accusations that [were] chucked at you – I thought they would have come out all guns blazing at the weekend [against West Ham] but the first half, Liverpool were rotten again.”
Liverpool have hit a slump at the wrong time
The month of April has not been kind to Liverpool – who have seen their hopes of more silverware to add to their League Cup triumph this season all but ended.
The Reds began April with a routine 3-1 win over the Premier League’s bottom club Sheffield United at home – but calamity was just around the corner.
A 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford was the beginning of a run in which Liverpool claimed just two wins from seven games across all competitions.
Jurgen Klopp’s men suffered a 3-0 defeat on home soil against Atalanta to virtually end their Europa League hopes – their 1-0 win in Bergamo a week later was not enough to overturn the deficit – with a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Anfield sandwiched between the two games.

A 3-1 win at Fulham looked to have steadied the ship, but the Reds were beaten at Goodison Park by rivals Everton for the first time in 14 years before being held by a West Ham side coming off the back of a 5-2 drubbing by Crystal Palace, with Klopp and Mohammed Salah clashing on the touchline.
The chances of sending Klopp off with a Premier League trophy now appear slim – but Liverpool will surely be keen to resurrect their form and at least end their season in more positive spirits before Arne Slot’s reign begins.
In other Liverpool news, Steve Nicols has shared his view on incoming Reds boss Slot.
