Liverpool Women fired to fourth in WSL by Marie Hobinger in victory at Bristol City
Marie Hobinger’s well-taken winner was enough for Liverpool Women to come away from their trip to Bristol City with victory on Saturday (20 April).
Matt Beard’s side hadn’t been in action for almost three weeks after the heavy defeat to Manchester City on 30 March but the belated return to action saw an important win secured.
The 1-0 result was enough to push the Reds up to fourth in the WSL, at least until the conclusion of Manchester United’s clash with Tottenham on Sunday.
Austrian Hobinger smashed low into the bottom corner from the edge of the box [WSL, 20 April] after a Missy Bo Kearns’ cross from the right was deflected into her path in the 13th minute.
According to the club’s official website Liverpool were resolute at the back but struggled to create many more chances of their own in the first half, before a change of shape from Beard as he brought on Gemma Bonner at the break for Leanne Kiernan.
Liverpool Women rebound from heavy defeat to Manchester City
Hobinger went close to a second but struck the post in the second 45 of a tight encounter but her early opener was ultimately enough for the win at Ashton Gate.
With three games remaining, having played at least one more than the side’s from first to sixth, the Reds’ current position is almost-certainly the highest they can hope to finish in the league table this term.
But with United able to go ahead on goal-difference with a draw against Spurs it looks like a lot will rest on the 5 May meeting between the two sides.
Even then Emma Hayes’ table-toppers and four-times reigning champions Chelsea will likely have their own say as they face both Liverpool and United before the end of the season.
Taylor Hinds and company welcome the Blues next up on 1 May, and in preparation have brushed off a chastening loss last time out to get back to winning ways.
In other Liverpool news, a finance expert has projected the club to have plenty of room to spend on the men’s team at the start of the post-Jurgen Klopp era.
