Liverpool projected to have £100million spending scope under new rules after Jurgen Klopp exit
Liverpool are projected to benefit from millions in headroom to spend on the squad under new rules due to be brought in next year, according to Kieran Maguire.
The University of Liverpool football finance expert posted a set of figures on Twitter (11 April) to estimate how much leeway each of last season’s Premier League clubs would have to invest in the playing staff under the expected new system, which is due to replace current profit and sustainability rules [Guardian, 12 April].
With Jurgen Klopp having announced that he is leaving the club at the end of the current campaign the Reds face more uncertainty this summer than they have at any point since he arrived in 2015.
So it looks all the more important for the club to be able to provide the German’s successor with the financial tools to equip his squad as required and ensure there isn’t a period of turbulence at Anfield, as often follows the departure of a significant manager who has been in place for a long time.
Will Liverpool be signing players for Ruben Amorim?
Whether it is Ruben Amorim coming in or not, at the same time that a UEFA-style squad cost cap system is imposed where squad spending on wages, transfer fees and agent fees are not allowed to exceed a percentage of the club’s revenue, the new manager is bound to want to shape Liverpool in their image.
It has so strongly been associated with Klopp over the past near-decade that an overhaul may be extensive, so with Maguire predicting that Liverpool will have the fifth-most scope to spend that looks set to be a positive for the club.
Treble-winners Manchester City, Tottenham benefiting from their glittering all-purpose stadium, the increasingly Chelsea-funded Brighton, and Manchester United are the only sides slated to be ahead of the Reds, who are tipped to have £108.6m in headroom.
Allowing for the lack of Champions League football this season a club the size of Liverpool shouldn’t be in line to face spending issues so quickly after years of success, although a hit to the possible income from the Europa League campaign won’t help, but Maguire’s model suggests the club are well-placed to weather the uncertainty of Klopp’s exit.
In other Liverpool news, the club have announced plans to increase season ticket prices.
