Xabi Alonso will not be replacing Jurgen Klopp as the Liverpool manager, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Writing via his personal X account on Friday (29 March), Romano reported that Alonso is set to stay at Bayer Leverkusen with a public announcement due soon.

It is understood that Liverpool - as well as Bayern Munich - have been informed of the Spaniard's decision to stay at the Bundesliga leaders despite strong speculation linking him with a move to either Anfield or the Allianz Arena in the summer.

Who will be the next Liverpool manager?

It's not quite up in the air as to who will replace Klopp in the summer.

While Alonso was a very strong candidate due to his ties to Anfield and how well he's done at Leverkusen this season, he hasn't been the only manager linked with the soon-to-be-vacant Liverpool hot seat.

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim and Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou have also been linked with the upcoming vacancy on Merseyside [iNews].

Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and they don't get rejected very often so this can be seen as a blow for FSG and incoming sporting director Richard Hughes.

However, there are other irons in the fire and Reds fans will no doubt be waiting with bated breath to see who becomes the new number one pick at Anfield with the final days of Klopp's reign ticking away.
