Liverpool step up pursuit of Piero Hincapie, Jurgen Klopp has wanted to sign him for two years – report

Liverpool have stepped up their interest in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, according to HITC.

The news outlet reported on its website on Monday (18 March) that the Reds have been on the Ecuadorian international’s trail for more than two years.

It added that the Merseysiders are continuing to watch the 22-year-old’s progress, with veteran centre-back Joel Matip set to leave Anfield this summer.

Piero Hincapie deal could cost Liverpool hefty transfer fee

It doesn’t come as much of a surprise to learn that Liverpool are still hot on the trail of Hincapie on the back of his impressive performances this season.

The centre-back, who can also play at left-back, has been a hugely influential figure in helping Xabi Alonso’s side remain unbeaten in this campaign.

But as a number of Europe’s biggest clubs are also believed to be hot on his trail over a potential summer transfer, it will likely cost the Reds a hefty fee to sign him.

They are clearly looking to add more youthfulness to their defensive ranks, with Matip seemingly on his way out following his fitness issues over the past few years.

Klopp’s side could actually get a first-hand look at the Ecuadorian if they – alongside the Bundesliga club – both make it to the Europa League final this year.
